HSF Joint Workshop with WLCG

13-17 May at DESY is now confirmed for a joint WCLG-HSF workshop. News from WLCG to come soon. Note this will be the HSF’s 10th birthday meeting!

ICFA Seminar

Graeme gave a talk on Software at the ICFA Seminar last week, as part of a whole session on Software and Computing. Very nice to see these topics being taken so seriously at this level.

Working Group Updates

We extended the call for conveners until the end of next week, 15 December. Please think about nominations and forward to others who might make nominations.

Data Analysis

• Held meeting on HS3 (HEP Statistics Serialization Standard) on Nov 27: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1348309/ with discussion notes in google doc (recording on CDS linked to agenda). Further feedback on the standard, especially from beyond the LHC, would be very welcome—please see slides for more information and where to get in touch.
• Have contacts with Belle II. Would be good to reach out to ePIC and DUNE.

Detector Simulation

• Recent and planned sessions
  • Summary of the fast calorimeter challenge workshop and fast calorimeter simulation in ATLAS on November 27th; https://indico.cern.ch/event/1347846/.
  • Next FLUKA generation and its tangible convergences with Geant4 on December 11th; https://indico.cern.ch/event/1338814/.
• Also note the CAF meeting covering Celeritas next Monday!

Software Tools and Packaging

• Would still like to have one of the Spack developers visit CERN soon.

PyHEP

• PyHEP.dev 2024 in-person developers workshop set to take place the week of the 26th of August 2024 in Aachen. Details to follow in due time.
• Good-old PyHEP 2024 online users workshop likely to take place in July 2024. Details yet to be finalised.

Frameworks

• Held meeting on 29 November re. ATLAS’ evaluation of HPX. Helpful sharing of experience, and keeps us aware of options other than TBB.

Physics Generators

• Workshop on 13-14 Nov. on hardware acceleration. Very successful workshop with good representation from the community. Summary under preparation.

JuliaHEP

• There’s a topical meeting next week (Thursday), focusing on analysis: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1352914/.
• Videos from the November JuliaHEP workshop will be posted to YouTube very soon.
• The Julia in HEP paper was posted in Hacker News!

Other Interest and Activity Areas

Compute Accelerator Forum

• Meeting next week on General-purpose GPU acceleration of Geant4 with Celeritas from Seth Johnson.
  • Monday 11 December at 16h in 513/1-024.
• Meeting slots are booked for next year, second Wednesday of each month, 16h30.
  • Tentatively we have a talk on Garbage Collectors in January and HEPiX Benchmarking in February.
  • Please send ideas for talks to compute-accelerator-forum-organizers@cern.ch.

Website

There is an issue in GitHub to gather ideas about reorganising and revamping the website to better reflect our areas of actual activity.

We aim to try and have a new website ready for next year.

GSOC Mentor Summit Summary

EIROForum Training Working Group

This group has now started to meet. Stefan Roiser chairs and we should ensure that activities are coordinated with the HSF WG and EVERSE.

EVERSE Project

The EVERSE project (European Virtual Institute for Research Software Excellence) will start on 1 March. Kick off meeting will be joint with OSCARS in Thessaloniki Greece, 11-15 March 2024.

JENA Computing Workshop

After the JENA Computing Workshop in June, there is now a call for people to participate in the 5 key area working groups (HPC, Software, DOMA, Machine Learning, Training).

Next Meetings

Meetings have been booked for 2024, in the usual odd-numbered weeks of the year.
